    The objectives for cruise KM14-17 are to map the bathymetry of two gaps in two submarine ridges in the vicinity of Johnston Atoll. One ridge gap occurs along the informally named Keli Ridge (Hein et al., 2005) south of Johnston Atoll and the other ridge gap occurs north of Johnston Atoll that separates Sculpin Ridge (also informally called Karin Ridge) and Horizon Ridge, all in the central equatorial Pacific (Fig. 1). The cruise took advantage of a scheduled dead-head transit from Papeete, Tahiti to Honolulu, Hawai’i that could be extended for 5 days to include the planned mapping. The mapping is in support of the U.S. (Extended Continental Shelf (ECS) Task Force. These areas were identified by the ECS Central Pacific Integrated Regional Team as having the potential for an ECS

    Current methods of shoreline mapping include aerial and high-resolution satellite imagery and ground-based surveying, all of which require considerable investment of human and material resources. Mapping and continuous updating of the shoreline for developing countries, such as Nigeria, is a challenge. Most of the information on the Nigerian shoreline is based on ‘surveys of opportunity’ performed by various government agencies over a wide time span. Additional surveys conducted by the multi-national oil and gas companies exploring in the region are typically not available for use by government agencies. In cases where the data are available, the variety in methods used for shoreline mapping can result in inconsistencies

    Coastal states may extend the limits of their juridically defined continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from their baselines under the provisions set forth in Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). In a preparatory desktop study, the University of New Hampshire’s Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center analysed existing U.S. bathymetric and geophysical data holdings, identified data adequacy, and survey requirements to prepare a U.S. claim beyond the Exclusive Economical Zone (EEZ). In this paper we describe the methodology for our desktop study with particular emphasis on how we assembled and evaluated the existing data around the shelf areas of the United States, and estimated where additional surveys may be required
